WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION

 

In the ever-evolving interpreting field, professionals increasingly navigate the nuances of Video Relay Services (VRS) and Video Remote Interpreting (VRI). This immersive workshop enhances the emotional intelligence of interpreters working within these digital realms. Engage in an explorative journey through the core aspects of virtual interpretation, including fostering virtual empathy, cultivating presence and connection, building trust, and sustaining motivation. Dive into the dynamics of virtual teaming and discover how to interpret and respond to emotional cues within a 2-D space. The workshop culminates in a focus on holistic well-being, guiding interpreters through strategies for work-life balance, reflective practices, and effective decompression techniques, ensuring a commitment to self-care and resilience in the profession.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES

 

1) Participants will articulate the nuances of VRS and VRI settings, delineating each environment's similarities and distinct features.

2) Participants will internalize the concept of virtual empathy and strategize its application in VRI settings to enhance interpretative connection.

3) Participants will examine strategies for nurturing presence, cultivating trust, and sustaining motivation within virtual interpretative settings.

4) Participants will conceptualize the framework of virtual teaming and strategize collaborative efforts with fellow interpreters before, during, and after assignments.

Sarah Wheeler is an ASL/English interpreter, CODA (Child of Deaf Adults), and emotional intelligence coach with over 18 years of experience in the field. She has presented nationally and internationally on interpreting and communication topics and has served in the Air Force. Sarah holds a B.A. in Business Management, a Certificate in Nonprofit Management, an M.Ed. in Interpreter Pedagogy, and a Master's in General Psychology. She is also a certified EQ-i 2.0 and EQ 360 Coach. Sarah's work enhances interpreting processes by integrating emotional intelligence and user-centered experiences. Her diverse academic background and professional experience give her unique insights into communication’s evolving role in a global and technologically advanced world. As an instructor in Interpreter Education Programs (IEP), she has witnessed firsthand how interactions—whether in-person, virtual, or influenced by AI—can significantly impact outcomes
