Interpreting isn’t just about transferring information from one language to another—it’s about ensuring meaning is fully conveyed in a way that makes sense for everyone involved. Whether in a spoken or signed language, interpretation plays a critical role in bridging communication and understanding.
But what happens when context is missing? A message may feel unclear, intentions might be misread, and misunderstandings can affect relationships, outcomes, and trust. Language is more than words or signs—it’s a shared experience shaped by culture, emotion, and intention.
Why Context Matters
Interpreting requires more than linguistic skill. It demands awareness of how and why something is being communicated so that the message carries the same depth, nuance, and intent across languages.
1️⃣ Culture & Community Norms – What might be a common expression in one community could be confusing or even offensive in another. Understanding cultural expectations ensures that messages align with their intended meaning.
2️⃣ Intent vs. Impact – What someone means to say and how it is received can be very different. Interpreters balance both, making sure communication reflects not only the words or signs but also the emotional and relational aspects of the message.
3️⃣ Adapting to Different Settings – The way someone communicates in a casual setting is different from a professional or medical environment. Context guides interpreters in making choices that maintain clarity, respect, and effectiveness.
Building Stronger Communication
Recognize the role of intention – What was meant? How might it be received differently based on context?
Foster mutual understanding – Whether you are an interpreter or someone who works with interpreters, taking a moment to confirm shared meaning can prevent misunderstandings.
Acknowledge multiple perspectives – People who use interpreting services each have unique communication needs and preferences. Centering their experiences strengthens access and inclusion.
